Zhejiang is situated on the south-eastern coast of China on the southern wing of the Yangtze River Delta and faces the East China Sea to the east, neighboring Shanghai to the north, the largest metropolis of China, covering a landmass of 101,800 km2 and a population of 46mn. With an advantageous geographical location and favorable natural conditions, Zhejiang has long been known as a land of fish and rice, a home of silk and tea, a place of rich cultural telics and a paradise for tourists.

Zhejiang enjoys one of the most vigorous economies in China. In 2004,its GDP reached RMB￥11243bn, and per capita GDP RMB￥23942, all ranking itself the 4th among all the provinces in China.

For the past two decades since the implementation of the opening-up policy, Zhejiang's economy has witnessed a fast development and a primary pattern of all-around, multi-level, and wide-range has been taken shape. International exchanges have been forged as a fact that it has set up trade relations with 205 different countries and areas. In 2004, the total volume of export and import reaches USD$821.3bn, ranking itself the 4th of the nation, among which export stands at USD$581.6bn, import USD$270.7bn. There are all together 3824 foreign-funded enterprises that have been approved by the government with a total of contracted value of USD$145.6bn, and 378 Zhejiang-based ones abroad with a total Chinese investment of USD$16760mn.

Zhejiang Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau is a department of Zhejiang People's Government in charge of foreign trade, utilization of FDI and investment abroad and other forms of economic cooperation.
